They yearned for it and basically travelled all around the world in a futile effort to find new spices.  But, of all the men obsessed by sensuous spice, none was as seduced as Christopher Columbus, who went across the ocean searching for spices like cinnamon, turmeric, and ginger. However, one spice he looked for in particular was the black pepper!

Although black pepper is quite overlooked these days, it the peak days of spice trade black pepper was used as currency! It is high time people started looking on this spice differently, as it indeed has a lot to offer. Black pepper, particularly black pepper essential oil, offers a wide range of surprising health benefits.

Health Benefits of Black Pepper Essential Oil

Black pepper essential oil offers countless remedial properties, including laxative, carminative, antibacterial, expectorant, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, diuretic, antiseptic, stimulant, antispasmodic, rubefacient, diaphoretic, febrifuge, and many more.

  • Good for the stomach: It increases the secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, which in turn improves digestion. Healthy digestion is essential to prevent colic, constipation, and diarrhea.  Black pepper also prevents the formation of intestinal gas and it promotes urination and sweating, which helps remove toxic matter from the body.
  • Weight loss: The outer layer of the peppercorn stimulates the breakdown of fat cells, which makes it ideal for blasting fat and shedding weight in an all-natural way.
  • Skin health: Pepper helps cure vitiligo, a condition which causes areas of the skin to turn white. It has been scientifically shown that piperine present in pepper stimulates the production of pigment.
  • Respiratory relief: Pepper relieves nasal congestion and sinusitis, due to its ability to dissolve mucus and phlegm in the respiratory tract.
  • Antibacterial activity: Pepper`s antibacterial properties help fight against insect bites and infections. Regular consumption of this spice cleanses the arteries, reducing the risk of atherosclerosis.
  • Antioxidant activity: Its antioxidant properties help prevent or repair damage by free radicals, which in turn protects against liver problems, cardiovascular disease, and even cancer.
  • Neurological health: Piperine, one of the major compounds of black pepper, has been found to reduce cognitive malfunction and memory impairment.

The benefits of black pepper essential oil heavily depend on the way it is consumed. It can be ingested, inhaled, or applied topically.  Read on for more in-depth information regarding the three ways of using black pepper essential oil and the benefits attributed to each, respectively.

When ingested, such as added to BBQ or steak sauce, black pepper essential oil provides sesquiterpenes, potent antioxidants which are known to promote urination and sweating, two ways in which the body eliminates toxins.  This oil also increases bile in the stomach, which helps break down food and ensure healthy digestion.

While black pepper essential oil is mostly known for its ability to relax the body physically, it relaxes the mind, too.  When inhaled, often used aromatically with oils like lavender and juniper, it helps ease mental stress and help people deal with the stress of smoking cessation.

Ultimately, using black pepper oil topically along with carrier oil, helps relax the muscle and alleviate cramps and pulls. Its antispasmodic properties alleviate cramps while its antioxidant properties remove uric acid from the blood, making it beneficial for people suffering from gout, arthritis, and rheumatism.

Scientists Find Drug That Might Stop Breast Cancer Spreading To Bones

Breast cancer can certainly be deadly, but often, fatalities result from the spread of cancer to other organs, like the bones.

Fortunately, scientists at the University of Sheffield in England discovered a treatment that may prevent breast cancer from spreading to the bones.

Even better, the medication is already FDA approved and inexpensive.

In the UK, nearly 85 percent of breast cancer deaths are tracked to secondary tumors in the skeletal system. However, bisphosphonates — drugs commonly used to treat osteoporosis — prevent breast cancer from entering the bones about 30 percent of the time.

In collaboration with the Institute of Cancer Research in London and the University of Copenhagen, Sheffield researchers uncovered the way cancer cells burrow into the bones.

Furthermore, they learned osteoporosis medication prevents this process, most notably in those with the ER-negative form of the disease.

In a statement, coauthor Dr. Alison Gartland, a bone specialist at the university, said,

The researchers are conducting additional studies and trials to determine the effectiveness of the drugs on larger populations, but according to Dr. Gartland,

If this treatment is approved, patients will begin taking the bisphosphonate pills immediately after diagnosis to prevent the spread of cancer. It is important to treat early, as coauthor Dr. Janine Erler explains, because once cancer does spread to the bone, it’s incredibly difficult to treat.

This news comes on the heels of another important breakthrough in cancer research that revealed the herpes virus may be the key to treating skin cancer.

Warning Signs of Heart Disease Can Be Detected in Your Eyes

If you have noticed raised yellow patches over your upper or lower eyelids, near the inner part of the eye, you might want to consider investigating this further. A study published in the British Medical Journal in 2011, suggested that there is a link between heart disease and the yellow markings, medically known as xanthelasmata or xanthelasma palpebrarum.

The Link Between Xanthelasma and Heart Disease

Xanthelasma occur in both men and women and are more common after the age of 40. Research has established that these yellow plaques are deposits of cholesterol and are linked to higher than average cholesterol levels in about half of the cases. They don’t interfere with the vision and are soft and painless, so many people ignore them. Some choose to remove them for aesthetic purposes and don’t give it much thought, potentially missing an important warning sign. When removed, they often reoccur.

The Scientific Evidence

A Danish based study (the Copenhagen City Heart Study) looked at the correlation between xanthelasmata and heart disease in the general population. The research team, led by professor Tybjaerg-Hansen, reached some conclusions that will change the way many people and clinicians view these seemingly harmless spots.

A large prospective study included 12,745 people aged 20 to 93 years, who were free of ischemic heart disease at the beginning of the study. The participants were followed from 1976-8 until 2009.

In all age groups, the risk of heart attack, heart disease and death increased significantly in the presence of xanthelasma. Both men and women with the yellow eye lid marks were more likely to suffer a heart attack or die within a 10-year period.

Men Are More Prone To Develop Heart Disease

Generally speaking, men are inherently more prone to develop heart disease.

The study found that men aged 70 to 79 years were at the highest risk, and the risk was further increased by 12% in the presence of xanthelasma.
Women with xanthelasmata were 8% more likely to develop a heart attack compared to their counterparts without the yellow patches.
Since women have a smaller inherent risk of developing heart disease, xanthelasmata have a larger prediction value in this group, as explained by the authors of the study.

The study concluded that xanthelasmata predict risk of heart attack, ischemic heart disease, severe atherosclerosis and death, independently of other risk factors, such as smoking, high blood pressure, cholesterol levels and obesity.

The findings are believed to assist with the diagnosing of heart conditions, and could be particularly valuable in places where access to laboratory facilities is scarce.

What Should You Do

If you notice yellowish marks on your upper or lower eyelids, it would be recommended to have your plasma lipid (fat) levels checked. As the plaques can be an indicator of high cholesterol, consider lifestyle and diet changes to support your heart and overall health.

8 Simple Signs Of Diabetes In Your Children That You Should Know

Even though diabetes has become increasingly easier to manage over the years, it still should be treated immediately and properly since it can be fatal. According to a research, diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the US.  And while less than 1% of children and teenagers have diabetes, those numbers are rising. In order to prevent death, you should know how to recognize the symptoms of diabetes so in this article we will present 8 simple signs of diabetes in your children.

Here Are The Symptoms:

Abnormal thirst
According to Mayo Clinic, diabetes creates sugar build up in your bloodstream and as a result it pulls fluid from the tissues. Extremely thirsty child is probably one of the easiest symptoms to spot.

Those children who are dealing with diabetes will experience constant exhaustion since the lack of sugar in their body cells can make them have no energy.

There are evidences which show that children who are dealing with type one diabetes change their mood and suddenly become grumpier. However, children often change their mood for a lot of other things, so instead assuming it is diabetes, you should first consult a doctor.

Itchy skin
According to the American Diabetes Accociation, diabetes can make your skin itchy through poor circulation or because of yeast infections.

Losing weight
If your child is losing weight for no apparent reason, it can be a symptom for diabetes because the body doesn’t have the energy sugar supplies and without it, the fat stores and the muscles shrink.

Blurry vision
If your child experiences blurry vision, consult you doctor because this is an indicator of diabetes. The reason why this happens is because sugar is pulling the lenses fluid away from the eye which makes focusing difficult.

Intense hunger
Without enough insulin, the sugar is not moving through to the cells in the body which is why your kid’s diabetic body is crying for energy. Therefore, your child will experience constant cravings for food.

Frequent peeing
Frequent peeing is a result of frequent drinking of liquids, so this can also be a sign of diabetes.

What can you do if your child has these symptoms?

Make sure to consult your doctor immediately if your child is showing more than one of the abovementioned symptoms. The doctor will run some tests.

How do they test for diabetes?

When It comes to children, doctors usually do a random blood sugar test which tests for type 1 diabetes, and it’s checking to see if the blood sugar level is high.

Sometimes they also use an A1C test that measures your kid’s average blood glucose, or the fasting blood sugar test.

What happens if diabetes goes undiagnosed?

If diabetes is not diagnosed and managed on time, it can cause severe health problems such as nerve damage, kidney failure, stroke, cataracts and heart attacks.

Make sure to pay close attention to all the symptoms your child is showing in order to safe their life.

Will my child ever be able to eat cake again?

As we previously mentioned, managing diabetes is becoming much easier which means that children with diabetes can do the same things as children without it.  They can even eat sugar, but in moderation, which is healthy for every child, not only for those dealing with diabetes.

How will life change?

First of all, you will have to visit your doctor more frequently, in order to test the blood sugar levels and manage the diabetes. Moreover, you will need to start planning your child’s meals for healthier living. However, there is no reason to worry since the doctor will navigate you through the whole process.

What the Color of Your Urine Says About the Hidden Problems in Your Body

Most of us don’t really like to discuss things like urine or feces, but the reality lies in the fact that both of these excretions are crucial for a sound health. We may not discuss them openly but we all know that a little too much or a little too less of both or these excretions aren’t good for our health. But most of us easily flush it down without paying much attention or glancing over it to look for any abnormalities.

But then again there are a few things that are surely visible to all of us while urinating. Maybe for men it is easier to notice them when it enters the urinary bowl and for women only if they view the tissue after wiping it off. Other than that, if there is a burning sensation or pain during urination, it also triggers a thought to check what you are excreting. But then again, more physical specs are always very visible to most of us.Now what is important is to know what our urine tells about us. Well, experts say that urine is the easiest way to self-examine what goes on in your body. If there is a problem somewhere, it will show up in your excretion. The change in the smell, color and odor are direct indications of malfunctioning of our body systems.

The urine is helpful in indicating pregnancy, if you have an internal injury or problem that can’t be detected on the outside or that your intake of some scrumptious colorful berry is a lot more than it should be. Moreover, it can also indicate some Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), dehydration by the change of color of your urine, which means that it becomes darker and more concentrated, also tell if the amount of nicotine or caffeine has increased in your body, especially that of women.

Moreover, if your urine smells funny, then that is normal. I know it sounds weird, but funny smell from the urine is fine. But other characteristics as mentioned above, such as pain or burning sensations can tell a person easily that he or she needs a checkup as soon as possible. But with that, don’t forget that too much LU and too little or no LU are very dangerous as well. So try keeping is balanced.

Normally, the urine is and should be of a pale yellow color. This is because it contains a substance called “urochrome”; a substance produced at the breakdown of hemoglobin. But urine seems to change color for many reasons; some alarming and some harmless.

Go through the different colors of urines and compare yours with them:

  • Dark yellow: as pale yellow is the normal color of urine, dark yellow indicates that the person is dehydrating as the concentration of salts is higher than normal. Lesser the water, darker the yellow shade of the urine, so try drinking more water than usual in such a condition.
  • Red: basically this is varying from a shade of pink to dark red. A test can really specify if the urine contains bloods or building blocks of blood such as the hematuria. But this is a serious condition which you must get checked. It can be because of any infection in the bladder, urinary tract, or urethra. Also, cancer in prostrate parts of men or in the bladder of both gender, and strenuous exercise can all lead to urine to be red.
  • Brownish black: here the color also varies from brown to black. It may be form of red urine in a darker shade. But this is because of malfunctioning of the liver and conditions like hepatitis, bile duct blockage, a tumor or even cirrhosis for the Bilirubin (blood building matter) appears in the urine. But more sever conditions like Hemolytic anemia and Malenoma can also be a cause for brownish black urine.
  • Orange: many medicines can turn the urine orange or even treatments like Mainstay TB treatment, Rifampin, isoniazid and Phenazopyridine. Also, excessive intake of citrus juices and carrots can also be a reason for orange urines.
  • Purple: caused by the purple urine bag syndrome, in which bacteria colonize the catheter. The urine consists of substances of red, blue and indigo color which collectively give the purple colored urine. The only cure is to replace the catheter bag.
  • Blue: blue urines are produced due to the presence of Methylene blue. Though it is used in our medications, the blue urine can also appear because of blue diaper syndrome (BDS) and the hartnup disease.
  • Green: this is linked to the Methylene blue of the blue urine that mixes with the urochrome of tour natural pale yellow urine. Yet, a few medications such as anesthesticpropofol, Tagamet and Elavil can be the cause of this mixture or green urine. As harmless as it might seem, in rare cases does it ever showcase chances of infections in our Urinary tract.

The urine is an indication of some problem, keep checking it from time to time. Many people neglect these visible signs in their urine and suffer in the long run. Moreover, consult a doctor so that he may specify your condition and treat you accordingly.

Have you ever unpacked clothes you stored all winter and discovered some are stained with mildew? To get rid of it, make a paste of lemon juice and salt and rub it on the affected area, then dry the clothes in sunlight. Repeat the process until the stain is gone.

42. Eliminate Fireplace Odor
There’s nothing cozier on a cold winter night than a warm fire burning in the fireplace — unless the fire happens to smell horrible. Next time you have a fire that sends a stench into the room, try throwing a few lemon peels into the flames. Or simply burn some lemon peels along with your firewood as a preventive measure.

43. Neutralize Cat-Box Odor
You don’t have to use an aerosol spray to neutralize foul-smelling cat-box odors or freshen the air in your bathroom. Just cut a couple of lemons in half. Then place them, cut side up, in a dish in the room, and the air will soon smell lemon-fresh.

44. Deodorize a Humidifier
When your humidifier starts to smell funky, deodorize it with ease: Just pour 3 or 4 teaspoons lemon juice into the water. It will not only remove the off odor but will replace it with a lemon-fresh fragrance. Repeat every couple of weeks to keep the odor from returning.

45. Reduce Asthma Symptoms
In addition to a general detoxifying diet, 2 tablespoons of lemon juice before each meal, and before retiring can reduce asthma symptoms.

9 Great Reasons to Drink Water, and How to Form the Water Habit

We all know that water is good for us, but often the reasons are a little fuzzy. And even if we know why we should drink water, it’s not a habit that many people form.

But there are some very powerful reasons to drink lots of water every day, and forming the habit isn’t hard, with a little focus.

The thing about it is, we don’t often focus on this habit. We end up drinking coffee, and lots of soda, and alcohol, not to mention fruit juices and teas and milk and a bunch of other possibilities.

Or just as often, we don’t drink enough fluids, and we become dehydrated — and that isn’t good for our health.

I’ve made drinking water a daily habit, although I will admit that a couple of years ago I was more likely to drink anything but water. Now I don’t drink anything but water, except for a cup of coffee in the morning and once in awhile a beer with dinner. I love it.

Here are 9 powerful reasons to drink water (with tips on how to form the water habit afterwards):

Weight loss
Water is one of the best tools for weight loss, first of all because it often replaces high-calorie drinks like soda and juice and alcohol with a drink that doesn’t have any calories. But it’s also a great appetite suppressant, and often when we think we’re hungry, we’re actually just thirsty. Water has no fat, no calories, no carbs, no sugar. Drink plenty to help your weight-loss regimen.

Heart healthy
Drinking a good amount of water could lower your risks of a heart attack. A six-year study published in the May 1, 2002 American Journal of Epidemiology found that those who drink more than 5 glasses of water a day were 41% less likely to die from a heart attack during the study period than those who drank less than two glasses.

Being dehydrated can sap your energy and make you feel tired — even mild dehydration of as little as 1 or 2 percent of your body weight. If you’re thirsty, you’re already dehydrated — and this can lead to fatigue, muscle weakness, dizziness and other symptoms.

Headache cure
Another symptom of dehydration is headaches. In fact, often when we have headaches it’s simply a matter of not drinking enough water. There are lots of other causes of headaches of course, but dehydration is a common one.

Healthy skin
Drinking water can clear up your skin and people often report a healthy glow after drinking water. It won’t happen overnight, of course, but just a week of drinking a healthy amount of water can have good effects on your skin.

Digestive problems
Our digestive systems need a good amount of water to digest food properly. Often water can help cure stomach acid problems, and water along with fiber can cure constipation (often a result of dehydration).

Water is used by the body to help flush out toxins and waste products from the body.

Cancer risk
Related to the digestive system item above, drinking a healthy amount of water has also been found to reduce the risk of colon cancer by 45%. Drinking lots of water can also reduce the risk of bladder cancer by 50% and potentially reduce the risk of breast cancer.

Better exercise
Being dehydrated can severely hamper your athletic activities, slowing you down and making it harder to lift weights. Exercise requires additional water, so be sure to hydrate before, during and after exercise.

How to form the water habit

So you’re convinced that water is healthier, but you’d like to know more about how to make drinking water a daily habit.

Here are some tips that have helped me:

How much water?
This is a debatable question. What’s clear is that the old recommendation of “eight 8-ounce glasses a day” isn’t right, for several reasons: that amount includes all dietary water intake, including food and non-water beverages; it also ignores a person’s body weight, which is an important factor in figuring the amount; it also varies if you are sick or exercise. It’s also not good to just drink when you’re thirsty — you’re already dehydrated by then. Best is to form a routine: drink a glass when you wake up, a glass with each meal, a glass in between meals, and be sure to drink before, during and after exercise. Try to generally keep yourself from getting thirsty.

  • Carry a bottle
  • A lot of people find it useful to get a big plastic drinking bottle, fill it with water, and carry it around with them all day. I like to keep a glass of water at my desk, and I drink from it all day long. When it’s empty, I fill it up again, and keep drinking.
  • Set a reminder
  • Set your watch to beep at the top of each hour, or set a periodic computer reminder, so that you don’t forget to drink water.
  • Substitute water
  • If you would normally get a soda, or an alcoholic beverage, get a glass of water instead. Try sparkling water instead of alcohol at social functions.
  • Filter
  • Instead of spending a fortune on bottled water, invest in a filter for your home faucet. It’ll make tap water taste like bottled, at a fraction of the price.
  • Exercise
  • Exercising can help make you want to drink water more. It’s not necessary to drink sports drinks like Gatorade when you exercise, unless you are doing it for more than an hour. Just drink water. If you’re going to exercise, be sure to drink water a couple hours ahead of time, so that it will get through your system in time, and again, drink during and after exercise as well.
  • Track it
  • It often helps, when forming a new habit, to keep track of it — it increases awareness and helps you ensure that you’re staying on track. Keep a little log (it can be done on an index card or a notebook), which can be as simple as a tick mark for each glass of water you drink.
